Bring the seller's repair story into the inspection
If the listing advertises a new transmission, recent brake job or repaired cooling leak, request dated invoices with vehicle details. A fresh part or clean engine bay does not confirm that the original problem was solved. The technician can look for accessible evidence and current symptoms, but cannot validate every past repair without further testing.
Provide the VIN, mileage, dashboard photos and any repair claims that influenced the asking price. Note whether a warning appears only after driving or when the air conditioning runs. If the symptom is intermittent, explain that it may not recur during a short appointment.
Choose a meeting place where the car can be examined
A seller near Whittier Boulevard or Beverly Boulevard may suggest a shopping-center curb or busy roadside stop. Instead, request an authorized parking area away from moving traffic with enough room to open the hood and walk around the car. If the vehicle is at a dealership, the manager must approve the visit and any proposed movement.
Ask the seller to have the keys and vehicle available for the full agreed window. Permission to inspect does not automatically include a road test, and a safe route is required even with permission. If the car is blocked in, inaccessible or the seller changes the rules, some checks cannot be performed.
Use a short risk list instead of a false pass/fail
An onsite review may identify tire or brake wear clues, visible leaks, starting irregularities, warning indicators and accessible scan results where supported. It cannot reveal every hidden structural, internal or electronic defect. Separate findings that need immediate clarification from ordinary maintenance items and from areas that were simply not inspectable.
A buyer can use that list to request records, obtain a specialty shop evaluation or renegotiate before committing. Pre-purchase inspections start at $199 and require seller approval and confirmed dispatch arrangements. The existing inspection-fee policy applies if access or permission is denied; the inspection itself is not a warranty.
Questions about this appointment
If the seller says the brakes were just replaced, is that enough?
No. Request the invoice and allow an accessible visual review. A mobile inspection may find current concerns but cannot prove every step of the prior repair.
Can the inspection tell me exactly what the car will cost to own?
No. It can identify observable concerns and follow-up needs, not forecast every future repair or operating expense.
